Films about real dolls and the people who live with them

Two titles deal with the kind of doll people buy and live with: a drama and a documentary about real owners. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) follows a shy man who starts a romantic but nonsexual relationship with a life-size doll. The film is as much about the town as about him: his neighbors decide to react to the doll as if she were real.

The British documentary Guys and Dolls, also shown as Love Me, Love My Doll (2007), visits men who live with silicone dolls, and reviewers noted its sober, unmocking tone. Research points the same way: a 2018 survey of 83 owners found that non-sexual companionship came up often. A full-size Sanhui suits that kind of life at home, with a platinum silicone body from 150 to 175 cm and a Flexi Edition skeleton that lets her sit on the couch or at the table with you. More in living with a doll as a partner.

When a sex doll comes to life on screen

The doll that wakes up is a familiar screen idea, and two films on the list take it in opposite directions. In Mannequin (1987), a store mannequin comes alive only for the window dresser who sees her. Air Doll (2009), a Japanese film based on a manga, hands the idea to an inflatable doll that gains consciousness and falls in love, and tells the story from her side. Off screen, a doll’s expression comes from its face. Sanhui says most of its heads have eyes you can turn to look in different directions, its adjustable mouth opens and holds its position, and Agile Eyes, added in 2024, let you set how wide each eye opens.

Companion robots on screen: four recurring stories

Most titles on the list are about androids and AI rather than dolls, and they keep coming back to four stories.

  • The partner made to order

Four films start from a partner designed to fit someone’s wishes: The Stepford Wives, Cherry 2000, Zoe and I’m Your Man. Each follows what that design does to the people around it.

  • Can a machine feel?

Ex Machina turns the question into a test, Her into a love story, and Bicentennial Man into a two-century push for legal recognition.

  • The machine turns

In the thrillers Westworld, Subservience and Companion, androids stop following their script.

  • Robots at home

The Swedish series Real Humans and its English-language remake Humans put humanlike robots in ordinary family homes and watch how people change.

What these films get right and wrong about companion dolls

A Sanhui doll is a posable figure in platinum silicone on a steel skeleton, with textured skin as standard. It moves only when you move it and holds the pose you set, whether she is sitting on the couch or leaning on your shoulder for a photo.

The self-aware machines of these films remain fiction. Sanhui puts its work into the physical doll instead: the face, the skin and a skeleton designed for a wide range of poses. In April 2025 it added a Real Skin body with more detailed skin, and the newest dolls of 2025–2026 shows what else has changed.

Close to real life

  • A doll kept as company, as in Lars and the Real Girl and the British documentary
  • Owners who know the doll is not alive and still feel a kind of care, as a 2026 interview study describes
  • Family and neighbors deciding how to react, the center of Lars and the Real Girl

Pure fiction

  • Dolls or robots that walk, think and become self-aware
  • Androids built on demand as a perfect partner
  • Machines that turn dangerous on their own

Where to start

  1. 01

    For a gentle drama

Lars and the Real Girl (2007), the film closest to real doll ownership.

  2. 02

    For ideas about AI love

Her (2013), then I’m Your Man (2021), Germany’s Oscar entry, which made the shortlist.

  3. 03

    For a thriller

Ex Machina (2014) or Companion (2025).

  4. 04

    For real owners

The British documentary Guys and Dolls (2007), about men who live with silicone dolls. After that, what Sanhui owners report shows how one of today’s dolls holds up at home.

Sex robot movies: FAQ

What is the movie about a man who falls in love with a doll?

Lars and the Real Girl (2007, US). A shy man starts a romantic, nonsexual relationship with a life-size doll, and his small town decides to treat her as if she were real. For a man who falls for an AI instead of a doll, watch Her (2013).

Is there a movie where a sex doll comes to life?

Two films use the idea. In Air Doll (2009, Japan), an inflatable doll gains consciousness and falls in love. In Mannequin (1987, US), a store mannequin comes to life only for the window dresser who sees her. Both treat the doll as a character with a story of her own.

Are there documentaries about people who live with dolls?

Yes. The British documentary Guys and Dolls, also known as Love Me, Love My Doll (2007), follows men who live with silicone dolls, and reviewers noted its sober, unmocking tone. Studies of owners since then describe uses that range from companionship to photography.

Are sex robots like the ones in movies real?

Not in the movie sense. The self-aware androids of Westworld and Ex Machina remain fiction in 2026. What you can buy is a realistic silicone doll: a Sanhui, for example, is a posable figure on a steel skeleton with eyes you can turn and an optional adjustable mouth, and it moves only when you pose it.

Which films are about a robot built as the perfect partner?

The Stepford Wives (1975), Cherry 2000 (1988), Zoe (2018) and I’m Your Man (2021) all start from a partner designed to fit someone’s wishes, and each asks what that does to the people involved. I’m Your Man was Germany’s Oscar entry and made the shortlist.
